You'd expect this to compile without issue. You're just storing a reference to a task in a variable. What could be wrong?

In Swift 6 with strict concurrency checking enabled, the compiler rejects this code with an error: "Main actor-isolated var 'currentTask' can not be mutated from a nonisolated context"

This is the critical insight: in Swift's concurrency model, global variables are not free-floating. They are implicitly isolated to the main actor.

Note: Starting with Xcode 26, newly created projects default to @MainActor isolation for application code.

In older projects, the default actor isolation was nonisolated, meaning no implicit actor context was applied. This behavior can be customized in Build Settings by adjusting the Default Actor Isolation setting.
